17.1.2  Package Repository

The Debian-based distribution manages the basic program list information that can be installed and used on the system where the operating system is installed. This is called the package repository. The Debian-based distribution runs the package repository server on Internet and provides a package management system called Advanced Packaging Tool (APT), a tool for searching, installing, and manipulating packages in the package repository.

The package repository contains the following information:

    Package list allowed for installation.

    Dependency between packages.

Information about the latest version and release.

The necessary data to install a specific package and the source of the data.

Programs registered in the package repository can be easily installed and used with simple commands, and it is also possible to easily manage post-maintenance such as version upgrades for the corresponding packages. The fact that a particular program is registered in the package repository means that it has been officially approved to use the program in that operating system. Therefore, using the package management tools supported by the operating system, it means that it is possible to easily and reliably handle from installation to post-management such as deletion and upgrade.
