25.5.3  Jumper Wire

Jump wires are used to connect components and circuits when constructing a circuit. With a breadboard, you can connect electronic components to Raspberry Pi to a certain extent without using wires, but you still need wires to connect rows and rows on the breadboard.

For the wire used as the jumper wire, the solid wire is better than the. This is because it is easier to be inserted into the hole of the breadboard. Also, it is good to use various colored wires so that they can be distinguished by color according to the application.

There are things to consider first when considering the shape of the wire end of the jumper wire. The jumper wire has the shape of a male end or female end so and can not be used if it does not match the shape of the place to be connected. Thus, you must prepare the suitable wires for each use.

First, the GPIO port of the Raspberry Pi is a male form with the shape of a pointed gimlet. Therefore, if you want to connect any line directly to the GPIO port, the end of the line should be in female form so that you can easily connect to the sharp port of the GPIO port. In addition, the breadboard has the form where wires be inserted into holes on the board, so the line connecting the breadboard should be a male with a pointed end.

The following is a summary of major usages for each end of jumper wire.

    Female to female

It is used to connect a pin header of Raspberry Pi and the male pin of other external module directly without constructing the circuit using the breadboard.

Male to female or female to male

It can be used to connect GPIO pin to the hole of the breadboard or to a female pin of external module directly, or to connect a male pin of external module directly on the breadboard.

    Male to male

It is used to connect from one part of breadboard to another.
